Dj Sbu

Dj Sbu is a popular South African Radio Dj, Entrepreneur, and TV presenter. He was born Sibusiso Leope on born May 28, 1977, in Tembisa.

He began his education with Welamlambo Primary School, from where he moved to matriculated from the Central Secondary School in Pretoria in 1993. He proceeded to African Media University where he studied sound engineering, before moving on to have an electrical engineering certificate from Technikon Witwatersrand.

Dj Sbu is as well known as Mzekezeke (musked kwaito artist), or DJ Sbu (unmusked house and radio DJ), although he has never admitted being Mzekezeke.

Dj Sbu Career

His involvement with the media in the form of career began in 1998 when he joined a community station, Thembisa Info Radio, where he produced and presented a weekend show.

He became a producer and presenter of the programme, Beauty and the Beast in 2000. The Programme was presented with Angela Ludek and aired on the popular South African radio station YFM.

His engagement with the radio would continue in 2005 when he was appointed YMF’s radio Jock for Y-Lens show. He, however, had to resign as a result of many engagements.

Apart from the radio, he had entered into other forms of productions which began with his film called Hang Time, in 2000. In the same year, he appeared on Generations soapie, which was among the most popular soap operas in the country. He also became a part of Isidingo in 2001, and It Rained Last Night.

From 2003 to 2016, he has hosted the Friends Like These game show on SABC 1. In the 14th season of the show, she was replaced with Trevor Gumbi.

Sbu is also involved in business. With TK Nciza he co-owns a record label, TS Records. The record has turned out and promoted great artists in the country including Zahara, Lungelo, and Nhlanhla Nciza.

He launched his drink, MoFaya energy drink in late 2014. The drink which he has tried as much as possible to promote has been said to be the first and completely Black-owned beverage brand in the country. The company was co-founded with Siphiwe Likhuleni Shongwe to meet the fast growing demand for energy drink in the country.

Other engagements

DJ Sbu has also been involved in different things including the Sbusiso Leope Education Foundation, also known as S.L.E.F. The foundation was started over 10 years ago to provide educational assistance to the disadvantaged population of the country.

Through the foundation, Sbu has assisted over 400 young people through the annual SLEF bursary. He has as well gone from school o school in the country to encourage students and give motivational talks.

Recognitions

DJ Sbu has gathered much recognition in South Africa and beyond as a result of his extensive contribution to arts, the media, as well as through his entrepreneurship and the activities of his foundation.

He was listed as one of the thirteen young Africans to watch in Africa in 2013 by Forbes. In the same year, he was named by Mail & Guardian named as one of 200 brilliant Young South Africans. Another accolade came to him when he was named Sunday Times Coolest Brand.

In addition, his fashion sense has attracted attention when he was named by GQ Magazine as the Best Dressed Male in South Africa, a very prestigious award. Still, in 2013, he achieved big when he was awarded the Role Model of the Year at the Future Leaders Awards.

Troubles and controversies

Sbu has not been entirely free of various troubles and controversies here and there. In 2007, he was arrested for over speeding and given a nine-month sentence, suspended for three years. As a result of this, Dj Sbu’s car was taken from him by Audi who gave it to him for promotional purposes.

History would repeat itself again in 2014 when he would be arrested for speed driving, and in 2015 when he would be caught for drunk driving.

He got into yet another trouble in 2014 when his Mofaya energy drink carried the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) logo illegally. He also got caught in another controversy when he appeared on the cover of Forbes Magazine holding his energy drink online. The trouble came for him when Forbes released a statement saying he did not cover for the magazine.

In 2015, he got suspended and later fired from Metro FM when he promoted his energy drink, MoFaya, when he was presenting an award live on TV.

Dj Sbu net worth

In 2014, Sbu claimed his brand was worth R1 billion (approximately $78 million). In 2015 a post by DJ Sbu online claimed that he had gone broke but not poor. In fact, he stated that as a result of promoting his brand, he has gone into deep debt.

His actual net worth, however, is not known.
