President Zuma has been urged to discipline the minister of Mineral Resources, Mosebenzi Zwane over a “reckless” and “appalling” statement he issued over the weekend.
Zwane, on Friday, raised some dust after he issued a statement; calling for the establishment of a judicial inquiry into the closing of the Gupta family’s bank accounts.
The now-embattled minister; who claimed that the statement was issued on behalf of the cabinet also demanded an immediate and prompt action against the banks that shut down the accounts of South African-Indian business family – the Guptas.
Following the comment; President Jacob Zuma; the ANC; the SACP; Economic experts and analysts; and other financial organizations distanced themselves from Zwane’s misleading comments.
ANC Unhappy With Mosebenzi Zwane’s Comment
The ANC’s Zizi Kodwa condemned the minister’s actions; which he said has brought the country into disrepute and sent shockwaves through the markets. He called on Zuma to deal with the “arrogant” minister by firing him.
Kodwa said: “We think it was not enough that the presidency distanced itself and the cabinet from that statement. The president must discipline Zwane.”
Reacting on Sunday, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) added its voice to calls for Zwane to be fired. ACDP leader Rev Kenneth Meshoe described the minister as “irresponsible” and insisted that he must be punished for undermining the cabinet.
“If anybody talks about regulating the banks; there is no investor who wants to invest in a country where the banks are not autonomous,” said Meshoe.
Meanwhile, President Jacob is yet to take a stand on the growing calls for the minister to be axed. Presently, he is in China attending the G20 summit with several of his ministers and other world leaders; including US President Barack Obama and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Notably, Mosebenzi Zwane was the agriculture MEC in the Free State; before he was towered into the cabinet in 2015 as mineral resources minister. He took over from former minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi who is now at Public Service and Administration.
Also, Zwane is said to have ties with the Guptas. He reportedly played a role in the private jet carrying guests for a Gupta wedding in Sun City, landing at Waterkloof Airforce Base in 2013.
