Several shops at the Malamulele shopping complex in Limpopo have been gutted by a massive fire.
The authorities were notified of massive smoke coming out of one of the shops at Malamulele shopping complex at about midnight the Limpopo police said.
According to the police, the fire originated from one of the shops at the shopping complex and speedily spread to other shops nearby.
As a result of the mystery surrounding the fire, the police forensic teams will be deployed to the Malamulele shopping complex in Limpopo later this week to investigate crack the mystery behind. The fire reportedly gutted about 10 shops on Sunday night.
Considering the fact that a municipal demarcation dispute in the area now affecting Vuwani, began at Malamulele last year, police spokesperson Ronel Otto says investigations will determine if an arsonist caused the fire.
She says: “You can never rule anything out but at this stage we do not really suspect that it might have been the work of arsonists. Thorough investigations will be done to determine the cause of fire.”
During an interview on SAfm, Otto revealed that police received a call around midnight to report smoke billowing from one of the smaller shops in the centre. According to Otto, the smoke quickly gave rise to a massive fire which spread relatively quickly.
“The flames are still there, the fire is still on but it has been contained, so at this stage they are working to extinguish it but at least its not spreading to other areas of the shopping centre anymore,” she adds.
Just last month, reports had it that the food court area of the Gateway Mall in Umhlanga located north of Durban was engulfed in fire.
