Actress Leleti Khumalo Spills The Beans On Her ‘Abusive’ Marriage To Mbongeni

Sarafina star Leleti Khumalo has finally spilled the beans on her marriage which was alleged to be an abusive one.

The actress was married to popular playwright Mbongeni Ngema whom she met on set of the movie Sarafina. Notably‚ Mbongeni was still married at the time he met Leleti. But, it didn’t hinder his feelings as they had an affair before getting married in 1992.

It may have been roses and chocolates at the time, but after 14 years of marriage‚ the two went their separate ways. Whereas some women find it hard to leave an abusive relationship, Leleti explained that it wasn’t difficult at all to leave her ex-husband. The fact that her mind was already made up made things a lot easier.

During an interview with True Love magazine‚ Leleti reiterated that her failed marriage was abusive. She also emphasised that she didn’t find it hard to leave the relationship unlike most victims of abuse.

“Leaving Ngema wasn’t difficult because my mind was made up. I wanted out‚” she told the publication.



In a similar tell it all interview on e.tv’s The Close Up with Nicky Greenwall‚ the actress revealed details about the unhappy life she lived with her ex. The marriage affected her social life and dragged her a few steps backwards in her career.

“I wasn’t living a normal life. I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere I wanted to. I wanted to do different plays‚ but it wasn’t possible. I don’t know if I could say he was jealous of me‚ I don’t know.”

And then came the divorce.

“I woke up one morning. I don’t know what sparked it. I released a statement that we were divorcing.”

Apparently, Leleti Khumalo suddenly realised she could not take it anymore and took the easy way out.
