Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Councillors on Tuesday threw the Johannesburg Council sitting into disorder after DA Mayor Herman Mashaba refused to address some protesting community members; who marched down to the council in anger.
BuzzSouthAfrica learned that the aggrieved community members who were protesting at the city council demanded that Mashaba must pay R2 000 individually to over 100 EFF volunteers; who campaigned for the Democratic Alliance before August 3 local government elections.
Uncomfortable with the protesters’ hecklings and chants, the speaker of the council; Vasco da Gama asked for a 10-minute recess after EFF councillors insisted that the Mayor must address the crowd.
Thereafter, Mayor Mashaba and the EFF councillors left the council chambers to meet the protesters; and to also receive a memorandum containing their demands.
EFF Councillors Challenge Mashaba At Johannesburg Council Sitting
However, conflict erupted when the mayor tried to dismiss the protesters; insisting that he won’t address or take a look at their demands until he receives a detailed account of the situation.
At this point, the embittered protesters; together with the EFF Councillors challenged and obstructed Mashaba from leaving the area outside the legislature. However, the mayor was rescued by a team of police who confronted the protesters and chased them away with pepper spray.
This is not the first time the EFF is disrupting Johannesburg council sitting. Last month, the party made a mess of the council’s first sitting; when councilors obstructed Judge President Dunstan Mlambo from swearing in Dan Bovu – whom the opposition party alleged he offered EFF members R700, 000 bribes to vote for the ANC.
the EFF had earlier opened a criminal case of bribery and corruption against Bovu after he allegedly tried to lure EFF members to vote for the ANC at Johannesburg council election by offering them R500 000.
Bewildered by Bovu’s unfitness; the fighters wondered why the sitting should swear in a well-known criminal like Bovu; who is currently facing criminal charges
