During a gun battle with the police, three men were killed as they fled into the notorious Glebelands Hostel precinct in Durban in a hijacked Mercedes-Benz.
The hijacking too place in Merebank south of Durban when the driver was trying to negotiate his way out of the property. Police added that the three hijackers were young lads aged between 20 and 25.
Both the SAPS’ Provincial Vehicle Task Team and the Durban South K9 Unit responded to the incident as soon as they spotted the hijacked vehicle.
“They spotted the vehicle (and) a high-speed chase ensued‚” KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Shooz Magudulela explained.
However, the hijackers initiated the shootout with the police which eventually claimed their lives.
“The suspects lost control of the vehicle and it overturned as they attempted to enter the Glebelands Hostel. They managed to escape the vehicle and opened fire at police in an attempt to escape.”
The police responded to the shooting Magululela said‚ and amid gunfire, all three men were fatally wounded and they died on the spot. Three of their firearms were recovered by the police and sent for ballistics evaluation to check if they were used in any previous crimes.
There were no casualties on the side of the police officers as acting provincial commissioner Major-General Bhekinkosi Langa said in his applauding speech to the officers.
“We are relieved that none of our members were killed by these criminals. This incident once again highlights the dangers faced by our police officers when dealing with criminals. We‚ however‚ remain committed to fighting crime and ensuring that our streets are safe and we will not be intimidated by armed thugs‚” he said.
