Hey Buddy, Pause There! Oral Sex Can Give You Cancer

You already know that cancer is a monster always bringing death to us. To that, you’re hereby updated that about 500,000 people worldwide are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. A recent research came up with this information – oral sex increases the risk of getting a head and neck cancers.

It was uncovered that sexual contact between the mouth and the genitals or anus; fellatio, cunnilingus, or anilingus is the main way HPV gets to dwell in your mouth. And HPV as already established, causes some negative adjustment in the cells it has infected which can subsequently lead to cancer.

Based on the findings, your risk of getting cancer skyrockets 22 times anytime you involve in oral sex and men are twice more likely to get oropharyngeal cancer than women. This is so because of some issues i’d rather not discuss in details. Lets just say the act or practice of orally stimulating the female genitals (cunnilingus) is riskier than oral stimulation of the penis (fellatio).

The HPV virus, which is usually associated with cervical cancer, as deduced, spreads to the mouth during oral sex leading to a head and neck cancer. Relating how the study which found that the virus can be detected in a mouthwash, and can also be prevented with a vaccine. Mirror stated that;

The new finding was based on a study of almost 97,000 people who had traces HPV-16 in their mouth. They were cancer free at the start of the project and were followed for an average of four years, during which time a total of 132 cases of head and neck cancer were identified.

This was compared with 396 healthy subjects who acted as controls, with mouthwash samples analysed for the presence of several types of oral HPVs in both groups…the type of HPV found in the mouth is almost certain to be related to sexual activity, it is highly likely that oral sex is a risk factor for mouth cancer.

The human papilloma virus (HPV) is a very common and contagious group of viruses that affects a person’s skin as well as the membranes lining the body as in the cervix, anus, mouth and throat. Reports from the study indicated that carriers of the virus HPV-16 are prone to oropharyngeal tumours which affects the middle part of the throat including the soft palate, the base of the tongue and the tonsils.

While it was further related that unprotected oral sex enables the transmission of infections like “genital herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis,” it was advised that men wear condoms and for women “to place a latex square or dental dam over their genitals to help prevent contracting HPV during oral sex.”

Among the estimated 500,000 patients diagnosed with oral and oropharyngeal cancer in a year, more than two-third of the cases are diagnosed in advanced stages where the cancer has already spread to regional lymph nodes or beyond. Thus about 150,000 patients die each year as many more suffer from the complications of treatment.
