The much-anticipated Essence Music Festival Durban will be headlined by international stars Ne-Yo; Mary Mary and Yolanda Adams.
Also, international media personalities Steve Harvey; Estelle Swaray and Kelly Price will also grace the occasion.
The festival which takes place annually in New Orleans will now be extended to South Africa.
Essence President Michelle Ebanks said in a statement on the website;
“New Orleans and Durban are sister cities, and we are thrilled to present these sister festivals—both in 2016.”
“As Essence converges on Durban during South Africa’s beautiful summer season, we are creating a week-long experience that will inspire women globally and convene our communities across the diaspora.”
The event is scheduled to take place between 8 and 13 November at the iconic Durban ICC and the Moses Mabhida Stadium respectively.
Essence Music Festival Durban – What To Expect
A two-day music concert – Saturday 12 November and Sunday 13 November will be part of the Essence Music Festival Durban.
Subsequently, November 12 will be dedicated to the best of African hip hop; afro-soul; kwaito and house music. African stars Cassper Nyovest; WizKid; Burna Boy; AKA and Riky Rick will also mount the stage.
The star-studded line-up of local celebs include: Thandiswa Mazwai; Black Coffee; DJ Zinhle; Big Nuz; Tira; Oskido as well as Babes Wodumo. Minnie Dlamini and Somizi Mhlongo will be serving as MC’s, while R&B star Ne-Yo will perform as the international act.
Meanwhile, the second day of the festival, gospel music will take centre stage. Joyous Celebration; Sfiso Ncwane; Dr Tumi; Thobekile; Hlengiwe Mhlaba; Malusi Mbokazi; Izinceku and Ntokozo Mbambo will take to the stage.
Grammy-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo will also perform, while Mary Mary and Yolanda Adams will be the international act.
Thus, speaking on the event, Head of Durban Tourism Phillip Sithole expressed;
“This festival enhances our destination image by creating global awareness and attracting tourism business to generate future inbound travel.”
“We are hoping that through this partnership with Essence, we can infiltrate the USA market and the rest of the African continent to encourage visitors arrivals to our city,” he added.
In addition, the event promises to inspire more women than ever before.
