Yesterday, at about 18:00, five men approached a farm worker at Rustig farm, outside Maclear saying they wanted to buy some cattle.
Now, a murder case is being investigated by the Queenstown Organised Crime unit following the murder and assault of an elderly couple at the farm.
As it happened, the farm worker referred the men to the 74-year-old farm owner, Louis Van den Berg. He never imagined he was introducing Mr. Louis to some criminal bunch who’ll take his life.
SAPS related that Mr. Louis invited the men into his farm, and after a while, the farm worker heard screams which he went to investigate.
Alas! The criminal grabbed him and took him inside the farm house where they demanded the keys to a safe.
“After a struggle, which left Mrs. Van den Berg injured, they got access to the safe and took several firearms and fled on foot after they tied up the worker and Mrs. Van den Berg.
“The worker managed to untie himself and contacted the family members who then alerted the police. Mrs. Van Den Berg was taken to hospital for medical attention and Mr. Van Den Berg’s body was found at the gate of the yard, alleged to have been assaulted and stabbed,” SAPS narrated.
In line with that, the police has called on anyone who can assist with any information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact Investigating Officer, Captain Nkampini on 071 481 2686 or approach the nearest police station.
