Opposition Party, Democratic Alliance (DA) wants Hawks disbanded and the Scorpions reinstated as the major “corruption-busting” unit in South Africa.
The Party called for the Scorpions to take “its rightful place under a strong and independent National Prosecuting Authority (NPA),” contending that Hawks has been politically captured.
Among other things, the DA cited the recent police harassment of the EFF leader, Julius Malema and Hawks investigation of the Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela as the very essence that initiated the need to get Hawks disbanded.
DA said it’s not surprising that civil society organizations will this week, contend to set aside Berning Ntlemeza’s appointment as Hawks boss. “The Hawks have become dogged by political interference and are now seemingly used to conduct political witch hunts.”
They are now used to settle political scores and to intimidate those who would speak the truth about corruption to those in power,” DA asserted. And related that recent examples of witch hunts in Hawks include the suspicious arrest of forensic investigator, Paul O’Sullivan, the investigation of the Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela, and Hawks bosses Anwa Dramat, Johan Booysen and Shadrack Sibiya.
DA complained that when queried “about the nature of their investigations that seem motivated by settling political scores, the unlawfully installed Hawks boss, Berning Ntlemeza, either obfuscates in answering critical questions as to the motives of his investigations or denies them completely.”
Accordingly, the opposition party pointed out that Ntlemeza said the Public Protector wasn’t being investigated. However, the DA disclosed that they’re in possession of a letter that confirms that Madonsela is “currently the subject of a baseless Hawks investigation for perjury.
One can only draw the conclusion that following her investigations of high-ranking ANC members that she has been targeted for no other reason than discharging her mandate without fear, favor or prejudice,” the party remarked.
Also, DA highlighted that the EFF leader was stopped while driving in Johannesburg in an intimidatory operation for no reason but for “his remarks and intentions following the Constitutional Court judgment against President Zuma.”
From the foregoing, Democratic Alliance argued that it is more important than ever to free the body fighting corruption in the country from political interference.
Thus, they want Hawks disbanded and the Scorpions re-established under the NPA so that the country can better fight corruption.
