The Democratic Alliance, DA, has asked the newly appointed Public Protector, Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane to clearly state whether she is meant to serve and protect the SA public or to exclusively shield Zuma’s hideous acts.
In a recently released statement, the party said it was still unclear whether Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane will oppose President Zuma’s application to take the State Capture Report on judicial review as he announced on Friday.
The party says it believes that as the public advocate, Busisiwe’s duty was supposed to be to protect the integrity of the office of the Public Protector, and to defend the remedial action recommended in the State of Capture Report in court by opposing the judicial review application.
But, with the current move taken by the new advocate, the party says its still unsure about who she plans to work for.
This comment follows report that the public Protector was lodging criminal charges against former advocate Thuli Madonsela in relation to the release of a recording that exposed Zuma’s repeated lies about not being given an opportunity to respond to allegations of state capture against him.
DA’s Chairperson of DA Federal Council and Shadow Minister of Correctional Services, James Selfe said while the state capture report was compiled by Busisiwe’s predecessor, Adv. Thuli Madonsela, it should not be viewed as a report by an individual but a report by a Chapter Nine institution.
He said Several actions taken by adv. Busisiwe since she began her role as Public Protector has proven she’s not after the interests of the public, but for Zuma and his cronies.
“The capture of vital state institutions is a critical issue in South Africa and it is of utmost importance that those implicated, first and foremost, Jacob Zuma, be held to account.” Selfe said.
“Opposing this application is a prime opportunity for the new Public Protector to show where her allegiances lie – with Jacob Zuma or with the office of the Public Protector and the South African people,” he added as he concluded by saying the DA will not relent in its fight against the capture of South Africa’s institutions by President Zuma and his Gupta mafia – we will defend the State of Capture Report in court, with or without Adv. Busisiwe
