Chinese National Nabbed Smuggling R6.6 million Rhino Horns

BuzzSouthAfrica has been informed about the arrest of a Chinese national.

The 28-year-old man was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport for allegedly dealing in rhino horn with an estimated value of R6.6 million.

Confirming this, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) related that the police recovered eighteen rhino horns weighing about 43kg during a routine search.

The rhino horns were concealed in his travelling bags. And, the man was in transit from Namibia to board a South African Airways flight to Hong Kong.

He will be appearing before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court for dealing in rhino horn under the Endangered Spices Act on Friday, 25 November 2016.

Records have it that poachers have killed over 5,900 African rhinos. In 2015, the number of African rhinos killed by poachers increased for the sixth year in a row.



Evaluations conducted to ascertain the factors inspiring rhino poaching, among other things, highlighted that an increasing demand for rhino horns in Asian countries is strengthening poaching crisis.

Albeit not backed by any scientific findings, it’s believed that rhino horns have the capabilities to heal diseases and even, manage hangovers.

Meanwhile, SAPS related that the South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) nabbed two Nigerian nationals in Braynston, North of Johannesburg for dealing in drugs worth an estimated value of R2 million.

As it happened, Hawks members received a tip-off about an illegal business at the suspects’ dwelling in Braynston.

Further investigations warranted a police search at the premises. When it was conducted, the police recovered plastics with residue, undisclosed amount of money, 7kg of Ephedrine and 2.5kg of Cocaine worth an estimated value of R2 million.

The suspects, aged  42 and 44 will also appear before the Randburg Magistrates Court on Friday, 25 November 2016 for dealing in drugs.
