Research and advocacy group – Good Governance Africa (GGA), has released the latest Government Performance index revealing the best and worst performing municipalities in South Africa.
GGA came up with the index after it studied various data like the census report, National Treasury’s Local Government Yearbook and many other data released by Stats SA.
With that, they observed the 234 local metros, assessed their well-being across 15 different criteria which was categorized under three main group that includes administration, economic development and service delivery.
The index showed that 12 out of the 20 best municipalities in the country are governed by the Democratic Alliance (DA). While Nine of them are in the top ten, 19 of the worst 20 performing municipalities are all governed by the ANC.
Below are the top 20 best municipalities as obtained from the Government Performance index.
Commenting, the DA stated that the above, “demonstrates that DA’s continued dedication and commitment to the poor is improving the quality of life for all citizens where (they) govern by providing access to piped water, reliable electricity supply, refuse removal and proper sanitation.”
Also, Dr Alain Tschudin, executive director of the GGA, related that “DA municipalities generally performed well across all three performance clusters. With regard to service delivery, the DA’s highlights include refuse removal, water, sanitation and provision of electricity. In administration, its highlights are municipal capacity and financial soundness…In economic development, the DA did well in terms of the poverty and unemployment indicators”.
Now lets take a look at the worst performing municipalities.
