A 48 years Zimbabwean called Solomon Musavengana from the Masvingo province has been reported to have beat his son to death for farting during their family meal.
According to an eyewitness, Solomon’s son Munyaranzi Musavengana who is aged 13 fell near their kitchen floor while he was trying to escape the punishment but was unfortunately caught up by the father who violently whipped him with a sjambok (a long, stiff whip, originally made of rhinoceros hide).
A villager named Tawanda Munesu said “While the family was in the middle of dinner in the family kitchen, Munyaranzi suddenly farted, and in anger, the mother Agness Dhliwayo seized the plate of Salza in a way to punish him”.
“In fear of being beaten, Munyaranzi bolted out of the kitchen but was suddenly met by his father who had sjambok in his hand” another neighbor said.
The eyewitness further said that after a while, the teenager complained of a terrible headache. But after several attempts by the family to administer first aid to him, the boy collapsed and later, died.
According to the Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Charity Mazula, the incident which occurred last weekend at about 8.00 pm has been reported to them and the boy’s father is currently under arrest.
“I can confirm the death of Munyaranzi Musavengana who died after he was whipped by his father Solomon Musavengana on the allegations of farting during dinner. Investigations are in progress” inspector Mazula said. The said boy has been taken to Masvigo General Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
Meanwhile, as the result of the postmortem is yet to come in, some of Musavengana’s neighbors who do not want to disclose their names said they suspected that the boy must have sustained injury in the head while he was escaping his father’s wroth and that could have caused his death.
“Munyaranzi slipped and fell headlong against a stone which was near the kitchen door and Solomon grabbed the boy and whipped him on his body” Tawanda Munesu added.
Report also had it that though the boy did not report any physical injury to any of his parents, he told his mother he had headache shortly before he collapsed.
Solomon Musavengana is said to be currently awaiting appearance in court.
