Following the case of a 24-year-old who was accused of drugging and raping a local student in Matsulu in November last year, Mpumalanga magistrate has raised alarm for people to be aware of a serial rapist who leaves his victims naked either near river or deserted bushes for animals to feed on.
This warning came after the magistrate refused or give a suspected serial rapist bail on Thursday
According to the magistrate Masango, the community complained to the court about a number of cases that took place in a same manner in Matsulu. ” It is believed that the suspect rapes and leaves the victims near a bush or river naked. These cases could not be linked to anyone as there was no suspect,” said Masango.
Masango however said he refused to grant bail to the accused because he would not wan to disappoint the community members who are interested in the case.
“I would be disappointing this community who have an interest in this case. This is a very strong case. In this case the victim didn’t die but she was able to point out the accused and he is also facing various charges,”
The victim of the 24 year old’s rape was found was found naked and confused in a bush near Skukuza and the Community members later hunted down the suspect and handed him to the police.
The alleged rapist is now facing charges of kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and attempted murder, to which he has not been asked to plead.
Meanwhile, the Limpopo police has also arrested an alleged rapist who was slumbered away while his victim called for help.
According to the Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the police officers descended on a bushy area near Masakhaneng section of Ga-Kgapane township on the outskirts of Tzaneen on Monday when the victim alerted them of after being raped.
“The victim was dragged by this suspect forcefully to the nearby bushes and raped. Subsequently he fell asleep and the victim managed to escape and call the police. The suspect was immediately arrested while still sleeping,” he said.
The 26-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Bolobedu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
