After a failed attempt to break that no award jinx at the Metro FM Awards last month, Akulaleli hitmaker Dr Malinga decided it was time to grab the bull by the horn.

Losing out on song of the year at the Metro FM Awards last month wasn’t easy for Dr Malinga who had sworn to take the award home. Nonetheless, he has taken a decision to award it to himself.

The musician was nominated in the Song of the Year category for his hit song Akulaleli, alongside Wololo, Mthande, Ndud’, Amazulu, Umsindo, Ska Bhora Moreki, Lion of Judah and Imali. However, Nasty C’s Hell Naw clinched the award.

A lot of people including Dr Malinga objected, saying Hell Naw did not deserve the award with reference to the other songs it was up against. In fact, rumours have been making rounds since the awards that Mabala Noise boss Reggie Nkabinde may have manipulated the votes by buying airtime for people to vote for artists signed under his label.

To Dr Malinga, some things about the awards did not just make any sense. Moreover, Akulaleli hitmaker Dr Malinga said that he was the most booked artist who has used his God-given talent very well.

Also, Babes Wodumo, who also lost out on the coveted award was reportedly devastated after the winner was announced. The Wololo hitmaker reportedly cried at the awards and Durban ICC staff had to calm her and her dancers down.

Babes was nominated in four categories at the Metro FM Awards – Song of the Year, Best Female Album, Best Dance Album and Best New Artist. Surprisingly, she lost out on all four of them.

Maybe Babes should consider doing it the Malinga way. The musician has chosen to give himself a pat on the back with a Lingas Entertainment song of the year award that he bought himself and would put up for display.
