Ajay Gupta, one of the Gupta brothers on Tuesday appeared before Public Protector Thuli Madonsela for a crucial and extensive interrogation on the alleged state capture.
For several hours, he was grilled by Madonsela at her Pretoria office. The meeting was arranged after the controversial South African businessman requested for it a few weeks ago.
Ajay’s appearance at the Public Protector’s office and interview with the public protector forms part of Madonsela’s high-profile investigation into allegations of the Gupta’s influence in the appointment of cabinet ministers, as alleged by Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor.
Commenting on the interview, Thuli said the extensive interview with Ajay Gupta was very cordial and very helpful. She, however, failed to comment further on the matter.
In addition, Madonsela said her office would also hold another meeting with the other members of the family. She disclosed that Ajay’s brothers are currently out of the state.
Madonsela was speaking during a question-and-answer session at a media briefing on the release of a report of an investigation into the abuse of power by the KwaZulu-Natal Treasury.
Last month, President Jacob Zuma fended off Parliamentary questions on whether he truly visited South African business family- Guptas’ mansion in Saxonwold‚ Johannesburg in the light of the state capture allegations.
But Zuma refused to admit in his written parliamentary reply that he visited the family; as alleged by the Democratic Alliance in its state capture application.
When asked to state if he or any of his cabinet members paid an unofficial visit to the Gupta family on September 20, 2015, just before Guptas’ buddy Mosebenzi Zwane became mineral resources minister, Zuma urged the DA to exercise patience on the matter since Madonsela is already investigating the case.
