We are often our own toughest critic. Most at times, we are never satisfied with what we have, we fall into the trap of comparing ourselves with other people without fully understanding the circumstances of their appeared success or our perceived losses.
This leads us to be harsher on ourselves than we deserve. We start to think of the things we ought to have achieved by now or the hurdles we believe we should have scaled; but the truth is, everyone in life moves at different paces and just because you’re not where you think you should be, doesn’t mean you’re failing at this thing called life. On that note, here are few signs you’re doing better in life than you think.
1. You’re Still Trying To Better Yourself
The simple fact that you’re still finding ways to make your life better is proof of better things ahead. We don’t give ‘not giving up’ the credit it deserves. Many people give up on their dreams, hopes and even their lives but if you’re still looking for jobs or looking for schools to apply to or even looking for love – that alone is a sign that things are about to get better, as long as you don’t give up and keep at it.
2. You Have Learned From Your Past Mistakes
The fact that you have learned from your past mistakes and are willing to absorb the lessons life throws at you puts you in a much better position than when you started. Life is not easy, no one ever says it is. But being able to get through all the ups and downs is a guaranteed way to survive.
Hindsight being 20/20 means you can look at your past mistakes and be sure not to make them again. With this, it not only means you’re doing exceptionally well in life, it also means you’re better off than those who are unwilling to learn.
3. You Have A Job
The ‘job’ in this sense can be interchanged with being in school, it could be you following your passion, or it could be the standard nine to five; not a lot of people can say this. Even though your job doesn’t pay as much as you’d want, the simple fact that you have somewhere to go when you get up in the morning is wonderful.
If you have a job that is paying just right but it’s not what you want to do, it’s never too late to chase your dreams. If you’re currently in search of one, don’t give up just yet – your opportunity is on its way.
4. You Have Where To Sleep At Night
If you have a place to sleep at night, that’s one of many telltale signs you’re doing better in life than you think, with the number of homeless people in the world, you ought to feel gratitude that you’re not one of them.
This is not to say your problems aren’t valid because you have a roof over your head, they are. But it’s always nice to remember that things could be much, much worse. Having where to sleep even if it’s your parent’s place or your buddy’s couch is just one less problem you have to deal with for the time being, appreciate it.
5. You’ve Been In Love
Even if you got your heart broken, Love is a beautiful thing and this might be surprising, but a large number of the population have never been in love. Sure, they’ve been in a relationship, they’ve also been quite content but not many people have had that ‘sweaty palm, heart stopping, butterflies in your stomach’ kind of love; even the people you envy. That you’ve, at any point in your life, got to experience true love not matter how fleeting is something you should revel in and appreciate.
If your life is not where you need it to be, don’t give up. Just keep working hard, be patient, explore the knowledge at your fingertips, explore the world around you and most importantly, stop comparing yourself to other people. This is only designed to bring you down. Especially people on social media.
You have to remember that they only show bits of the perfect pieces of their lives – not all of it. Also, stop trying to enforce societal expectations on to yourself – being 28 and still living in your father’s house is not a sin but just part of how story is turning out. Hang in there, the best is yet to come.
